I have an opportunity to purchase a very nice nickel S&W 27-2. However, the serial number on the crane doesn’t look even close to the NXXXXXX serial number on the frame. It is a 5-digit number with the capital letter L under the last number XXXXX. and then the capital letter F followed by a 2-digit number FXX under that at a slight upward angle.That would be ~1987. S&W started at AAA0000 in 1980 (for revolvers) and with a few exceptions (as noted by carguychris) they simply cycle thru them. ie. AAA0000 to AAA9999 then AAB0000 to AAB9999 and so on. Semiautos started at TAA1985 in 1984 and somewhat followed the same sequence till 1994.The "alphanumeric" - letters followed by numbers - serial numbers began in 1980. The S&W L frames, your Mod 586, were the first S&W's produced with this type of serial number. Yours then was produced in 1980-81 with some of that serial number as late as Oct of 1982. I assume the hammer and trigger on yours are case-hardened and the ejector is blued. If so, you have a nickel revolver from the factory. It's a Model 1905 M&P 4th change Hand Ejector in .38 Special. It has been renickeled and had the grips replaced, but I bought it as a shooter more than anything. The first serial number was S 811,120 and the last was S 999,999. Which means that 188,879 S&W M&Ps were manufactured with the “S” prefix. The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson does not list serial numbers for AR's. You'll have to contact S&W customer service to get a manufacture date.
